How we used our PE and Sport Premium

During 2025–2026, we used the PE and Sport Premium to support staff professional development, broaden extra-curricular opportunities, purchase equipment and resources, maintain memberships and subscriptions, support participation in competitive sport, and provide additional swimming opportunities.

Our expenditure was reported to the Department for Education under the following categories:

As part of our overall PE and Sport Premium expenditure, £1,755 supported top-up swimming lessons and/or the broadening of aquatic opportunities for pupils. Further information about our swimming provision and its impact is provided below.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

We invested £6,464.25 in continuing professional development during 2025–2026.

Developing staff knowledge, confidence and competence in PE remains an important part of our approach. Investment in professional development helps to build capacity within the school and supports sustainable improvements to PE, sport and physical activity.

Our approach provides opportunities for staff to learn from specialist provision and develop knowledge and skills that can be applied within their own teaching. This means that the benefits of our investment can continue beyond the academic year and support future cohorts of pupils.

Extra-curricular opportunities

We spent £4,546.99 on extra-curricular opportunities.

We continued to provide pupils with opportunities to take part in physical activity and sport beyond their curriculum PE lessons. Our aim is to give pupils access to a broad range of experiences, encourage participation and help children develop positive attitudes towards being active.

As part of this provision, our Year 4 and 5 pupils took part in an active residential at Dinton Pastures. This provided opportunities to experience outdoor and adventurous activities, develop teamwork and resilience, and be physically active in a different environment.

Pupils also enjoyed a day at Adventure Dolphin, further broadening their experience of outdoor and adventurous physical activities and providing opportunities to develop confidence, cooperation and new physical skills.

These experiences are particularly valuable within our small-school context, enabling us to broaden the range of sporting, physical and outdoor activities available to pupils beyond those that can ordinarily be provided through the core PE curriculum.

Equipment and resources

We spent £3,198.67 on equipment and resources.

Sports equipment and resources are regularly reviewed so that pupils and staff have access to appropriate, high-quality resources for PE, sport and physical activity.

Investment in reusable equipment also supports the sustainability of our provision, as these resources can continue to benefit pupils in future years.

Memberships and subscriptions

We spent £2,253 on membership and subscription fees.

Memberships and partnerships support us in providing a broader range of PE, sport and physical activity opportunities than we could provide independently. They also provide access to professional expertise, resources, development opportunities and wider sporting provision.

Competitive sport

We spent £210 on entering external school sports competitions.

Participation in inter-school sport provides pupils with valuable opportunities to apply the skills developed through PE, represent the school and experience competitive sport.

During 2025–2026, for example pupils proudly represented Purley CofE Primary School at the Cross Country Championships at Newbury Showground.

Our children performed extremely well, achieving highly placed finishes against pupils from a wide range of schools. Their achievements were particularly notable within our small-school context and reflected their determination, resilience and sporting confidence.

Taking part in events such as the Cross Country Championships enables our pupils to compete beyond the school setting, experience larger sporting events and develop confidence and pride in representing their school.

We've also taken part in the Small Schools Cross Country competition, an Adventure Golf Tournament and other events such as a Girls' Football Tournament to enhance our extra curricular offer.

We will continue to seek appropriate opportunities for pupils to participate in competitions and sporting events, while recognising the practical considerations associated with transport, staffing, parental support and our small cohort sizes.

Equality of opportunity

During 2025–2026, the school reported targeted PE, sport and physical activity spending to support disadvantaged pupils.

The school did not report specific targeted expenditure during 2025–2026 for pupils with SEND, pupils with long-term medical conditions or specifically for increasing girls’ access to PE and extra-curricular sport.

Our wider PE and sport provision remains inclusive, and we aim to provide all pupils with access to high-quality opportunities to be active and participate in PE, sport and physical activity.

We continue to consider individual needs and seek to remove barriers to participation wherever possible.

Impact of the PE and Sport Premium

Our use of the PE and Sport Premium during 2025–2026 has enabled us to broaden the range of PE, sport and physical activity opportunities available to our pupils.

Pupils have benefited from extra-curricular activities, outdoor and adventurous experiences, competitive sport, swimming provision and access to high-quality equipment and resources.

Investment in staff professional development also supports our longer-term capacity to deliver high-quality PE and physical activity by developing staff knowledge, confidence and expertise.

Our additional swimming provision has given pupils further opportunities to develop essential swimming and water safety skills. The school assessed the impact of this expenditure on swimming and water safety attainment as positive.

Sustainability

We aim to ensure that our use of the PE and Sport Premium creates benefits beyond a single academic year.

Investment in staff professional development builds knowledge, confidence and expertise within the school that can be used with future cohorts of pupils.

Investment in equipment and resources provides reusable resources for future PE, sport and physical activity, while memberships and partnerships help us maintain links with wider sporting opportunities and expertise.

Providing pupils with varied sporting and physical experiences also supports our wider aim of developing positive attitudes towards physical activity and encouraging pupils to see being active as an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

We will continue to review our provision and pupils’ needs when planning future expenditure so that PE and Sport Premium funding supports sustainable improvements.

Swimming and water safety

Purley CofE Primary School places a strong emphasis on swimming and water safety. As a school situated close to the River Thames, we consider developing pupils’ confidence, competence and safety in and around water to be particularly important.

During 2025–2026, our Year 5 pupils attended swimming lessons at The Oratory pool with a professional swimming coach.

These lessons provided specialist instruction to support pupils in developing their swimming technique, confidence, stamina and essential water safety skills.

We also aim to introduce these important skills from an early age. FOPS (Friends of Purley School) funds an additional half-term of swimming lessons for pupils in Years 1 and 2. This gives our younger pupils an early opportunity to develop confidence and familiarity in the water.

The PE and Sport Premium-funded Year 5 provision builds on these earlier experiences and supports pupils in working towards the National Curriculum swimming and water safety requirements.

At the end of the 2025–2026 academic year:

National Curriculum swimming and water safety measure Year 6 pupils meeting the requirement
Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres 81%
Use a range of strokes effectively, for example front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke 81%
Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations 81%

During 2025–2026, £1,755 of our PE and Sport Premium expenditure supported top-up swimming lessons and/or the broadening of aquatic opportunities for pupils.

The school assessed the impact of this expenditure on swimming and water safety attainment as positive.

Together, the early swimming opportunities funded by FOPS and our professionally coached Year 5 provision form part of our commitment to ensuring that pupils develop the swimming ability, confidence and water safety knowledge they need, particularly given our proximity to the River Thames.

Looking ahead to 2026–2027

We will continue to develop our PE, sport and physical activity provision and provide pupils with a broad range of opportunities to be active.

We aim to maintain a varied programme of extra-curricular and outdoor activities and enable pupils to participate in appropriate sporting events and competitions.

The school has identified extra-curricular opportunities and School Games Organiser (SGO) associated costs as areas where targeted support from the new PE and School Sport Partnerships Network would be particularly beneficial.

We will continue to consider the needs of disadvantaged pupils and work to remove barriers to participation in PE, sport, physical activity and extra-curricular opportunities.

As a small school, access to transport, volunteer minibus drivers, staffing and parental support can affect our ability to attend external events. We will continue to work with our families and local partners to maximise the opportunities available to our pupils.

Our overall aim is to use PE and Sport Premium funding effectively to develop high-quality, inclusive and sustainable provision, encourage pupils to enjoy being active and help establish positive attitudes towards sport, physical activity, health and wellbeing.
