Art

Intent

At Purley C of E Primary School, we nurture a love of creativity from the earliest years. Pupils explore a wide range of artistic forms, techniques and styles, learning to take creative risks and develop resilience as their skills grow.

Children study art from different times, cultures and traditions, learning about influential artists, designers and craftspeople. They develop the language of art so they can confidently discuss and evaluate their own work and the work of others.

Our curriculum enables pupils to:

  • Develop skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and craft

  • Use a variety of materials and techniques with control and imagination

  • Learn about significant artists across history

  • Express ideas and emotions creatively

  • Build confidence, independence and pride in their art

Implementation

Art is taught through a clear and progressive curriculum from EYFS to Year 6, with three core strands taught each year: Drawing, Painting & Mixed Media, and Sculpture & 3D, alongside Craft & Design.

Our mixed-age cycles ensure all pupils experience a broad range of media, techniques and artists. Examples include:

  • EYFS – mark making, natural materials, simple sculpture

  • KS1 – collage, waves and landscapes, weaving, clay plates

  • Lower KS2 – cave art, rainforest printing, papermaking, structures

  • Upper KS2 – photography, street art, seascapes, Tudor portraits

Teachers model techniques, build progression through sketchbook work and ensure vocabulary is used consistently. Lessons are adapted to support all learners and enriched with cross-curricular links where appropriate.

Impact

By the end of primary school, pupils at Purley will:

  • Have secure skills across drawing, painting, sculpture and craft

  • Use materials confidently and make thoughtful creative choices

  • Talk about their work using accurate art vocabulary

  • Understand how art reflects culture, history and ideas

  • Recognise key artists and draw inspiration from them

  • Take pride in sketchbooks that show progress, creativity and reflection

Pupils leave Purley as confident, imaginative young artists with the foundations needed for secondary art and a lifelong appreciation of creativity.
