PSHE

PSHE at Purley CE Primary School

At Purley CE Primary, we follow the SCARF PSHE and Wellbeing scheme to deliver a high-quality, evidence-based programme of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, including statutory Relationships and Health Education (RSE) . This ensures all children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive personally, socially and academically.

Intent

At Purley Church of England Primary School, PSHE enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society. It supports the development of the “whole child” — intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually — while promoting our core Christian Values of love, courage and wisdom.
Through PSHE, we nurture our learning values of collaboration, resilience, reflection and research, helping children to grow as curious and compassionate learners. In an ever-changing world, our curriculum ensures pupils understand diversity, equality and their role in contributing positively to both school and community life.

Implementation

PSHE is taught weekly in all classes following the CORAM SCARF programme, which provides a progressive and spiral curriculum covering:

  • Me and My Relationships

  • Valuing Difference

  • Keeping Myself Safe

  • Rights and Responsibilities

  • Being My Best

  • Growing and Changing

We enhance this with:

  • No Outsiders resources, using rich texts to explore diversity and inclusion.

  • NSPCC PANTS lessons in KS1, helping children understand personal safety and body autonomy.

  • Practical learning in KS2, including First Aid, Fire Safety, and Drug/Vaping awareness workshops.

Teaching is inclusive and adapted to meet the needs of all pupils, ensuring accessibility for those with SEND. Learning takes place in a safe, supportive environment where pupils are encouraged to ask questions and develop confidence and respect for others.

Impact

Our PSHE curriculum equips pupils with the emotional literacy, resilience and life skills needed for wellbeing and success. Children learn to value themselves and others, demonstrate respect and empathy, and develop the confidence to make informed, positive choices.
They leave Purley with the knowledge and self-efficacy to lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lives — living out our vision to “learn to love, love to learn.”

Further Information

Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory for all primary-aged pupils. Parents cannot withdraw their children from these elements but may request withdrawal from non-statutory sex education in Year 6.
