Maths
Intent
At Purley Church of England Primary School, we aim for every child to develop confidence and enjoyment in mathematics. We believe all children, including those with SEND, can achieve success through small, coherent steps that build deep understanding. Our curriculum develops fluency, reasoning and problem-solving so pupils can apply their learning in real-life contexts.
Implementation
We teach maths through a mastery approach, using the CPA (Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract) model to build conceptual understanding.
- Lessons follow the White Rose Maths scheme from Years 1–6, with Master the Curriculum used in EYFS.
- Children are taught in small groups (no more than 15 pupils) by qualified teachers for most maths sessions.
- Regular practice of number facts (KIRFs) supports quick recall, enabling pupils to reason and solve problems effectively.
- By the end of Year 4, pupils are fluent in all multiplication tables and complete the Multiplication Tables Check.
Impact
Children at Purley CE Primary demonstrate confidence, fluency and resilience in mathematics. They can explain their reasoning, apply skills to new problems and make strong progress across the school. By the time they leave, pupils have a secure mathematical foundation ready for secondary education and everyday life.
Please see the White Rose Maths Calculation Policy below for the techniques we teach here at Purley.
